An eye care professional (ECP) is an individual who provides a service related to the eyes or vision. It is any healthcare worker involved in eye care, from one with a small amount of post-secondary training to practitioners with a doctoral level of education.

Phaco Microsurgery For Cataract

Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye (also called "crystalline lens") that has developed an opacification, which is referred to as a cataract. Metabolic changes of the crystalline lens fibers over time lead to the development of the cataract and loss of transparency, causing impairment or loss of vision. Many patients' first symptoms are strong glare from lights and small light sources at night, along with reduced acuity at low light levels. During cataract surgery, a patient's cloudy natural cataract lens is removed and replaced with a synthetic lens to restore the lens's transparency.


Glaucoma Surgery

All glaucoma surgery procedures (whether laser or non-laser) are designed to accomplish one of two basic results: decrease the production of intraocular fluid (aqueous humor) or increase the outflow (drainage) of this same fluid. Occasionally, a procedure will accomplish both.
Currently the goal of glaucoma surgery and other glaucoma treatment is to reduce or stabilize intraocular pressure (IOP). When this goal is accomplished, damage to ocular structures — especially the optic nerve — may be prevented.


Retina Surgeries

Almost all retinal detachments can be repaired with scleral buckle surgery, pneumatic retinopexy, or vitrectomy.
But even with such a high rate of success for surgery, it is important to act quickly. The longer you wait to have surgery, the lower the chances that good vision will be restored.

Secondary IOL Implant

A lens implant is a small, plastic lens that an eye provider can put in your eye to replace a lens that has been removed because of a cataract. A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of the eye. The lens is located inside the eye behind the iris (the colored part of the eye). It helps focus light and images on the lining of the back of your eye. If the lens gets cloudy, it can cause trouble seeing. For some people, the lens gets cloudier over time and causes vision problems.

Green Laser PRP in Diabetic Retinopathy

The laser is applied the same way, usually through a slit lamp in the clinic. Each treatment is often 1-3000 burns or more. Much more in one session may cause inflammation of the eye, and too little too little an effect.
The side or 'peripheral' retina is lasered, not the centre; this is the main difference of laser for proliferative retinopathy as opposed to maculopathy above.


Intra Vitreal Injection

An intravitreal injection is a shot of medicine into the eye. The inside of the eye is filled with a jelly-like fluid (vitreous). During this procedure, your health care provider injects medicine into the vitreous, near the retina at the back of the eye. The medicine can treat certain eye problems and help protect your vision. This method is most often used to get a higher level of medicine to the retina.

Retinal/Anterior Segment Optical Coherance Tomographies

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high resolution cross-sectional imaging modality initially developed for retinal imaging. Anterior segment OCT (ASOCT) imaging was first described in 1994 by Izatt et al [1] using the same wavelength of light as retinal OCT, namely 830nm. This wavelength is suboptimal for imaging the angle due to limited penetration through scattering tissue such as the sclera. OCT imaging of the anterior segment with a longer wavelength of 1310nm was developed later on and had the advantages of better penetration through sclera as well as real-time imaging at 8 frames per second.


ROP Screening of Premature Babies

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that primarily affects premature infants weighing about 2¾ pounds (1250 grams) or less that are born before 31 weeks of gestation (A full-term pregnancy has a gestation of 38–42 weeks). The smaller a baby is at birth, the more likely that baby is to develop ROP. This disorder—which usually develops in both eyes—is one of the most common causes of visual loss in childhood and can lead to lifelong vision impairment and blindness. ROP was first diagnosed in 1942.
